Crystal Palace defender Chris Richards had a brief scare as he thought he was being sent off when the referee accidentally showed him a red card.

After awarding the free-kick, referee Michael Salisbury reached into his pocket and waved a red card before realising his mistake and bringing out the yellow.

United States international Richards and his Palace team-mates would have been relieved when the initial red turned out to be a mistake as the game was tied at 1-1 and going down to 10 men would have been a huge blow for the visitors. Despite managing to keep 11 men on the field, however, Palace eventually conceded a late winner when Madueke converted a penalty.
Chelsea will look to secure a second straight win in the Premier League when they visit Luton on Saturday in their final game of 2023. Later that afternoon, Palace will round off their year with a home game against Brentford.
